I always dislike this part of making a website because
I just don't know what to write or where to begin and I simply do
not enjoy writing about myself. Instead of boring you with a bunch
of stuff about my childhood I guess I will start out when I began
making art and dolls.
In 2002 I began taking classes for a multimedia/graphic design degree
program at the local community college. I was forced to take a design
class which included painting and learning about colors. It was your
basic first year art class. At first I loathed the class, I hated
painting and making a mess but I eventually I began enjoying it more
than I have ever enjoyed anything else. I started painting on my own
which greatly improved my skills. Then one day when I was at Dick
Blick I discovered polymer clay. I had to buy some and give it a try.
My first creation was a turtle which turned out to be a disaster because
I touched it right out of the oven and its head fell off. After that
day I decided clay was not for me and put the clay away for a long
while and went back to painting. As time went on I discovered dollmaking
and what actually could be made with polymer clay. I did tons of research
and bought some how-to DVDs. I still to this day have an entire folder
filled with tutorials that I found on the internet. I collect them
so I can learn new and exciting techniques. I love learning new things
every day because life becomes very boring if you don't. I actually
did not complete my first pure sculpt fantasy doll until November
of 2005. She was very raw and I wasn't happy with her and didn't know
if I would be able to do this type of work. Even though I felt this
way, I stuck with it though and have never looked back. Each time
I make one I realize that I sculpt certain things in my subconscious
without needing a reference. It's all about practice, I don't believe
you are born with this talent. It may come easier for some but I don't
think it is possible to sculpt something perfectly from your first
time. If you are starting out sculpting, please don't give up, practice
as much as you can and eventually it will come to you without even
thinking. Also, if a sculpture looks really bad in the beginning,
don't give up on that sculpture, sometimes all you need to do is paint
the eyes in order to see what the sculpture will become. Many times
I have wanted to throw a piece in the trash in the beginning but I
kept on with it and it became something wonderful.
I didn't stop with polymer clay. I like to move around to different
mediums like paperclay, epoxy clay, earthenware clay, and porcelain.
I have even tried paper mache and sometimes incorporate it into my
dolls and sculpture. The possibilites are endless when creating dolls.
I don't feel I am an expert in making dolls, I continue to create
them and with each one I see improvement. I have only created eight
fantasy sculptures to date and I can't wait to see how they look when
I am on my hundredth one. :)
When I am not sculpting, painting, or just creating, I am spending
time with my son and husband. We love going for long walks in the
city and in the woods. I'm always searching for nature stuff that
I can incorporate into my art in some way. We share our lives with
an English Mastiff, African Grey, 2 Sulcata tortoises, a box turtle,
and a dwarf bunny.
